Insect bites

During the summer months, visits to dermatology clinics increase due to the bothersome symptoms from insect bites, such as itching and rashes. Insect stings or bites may cause irritation or even severe allergic reactions.

Symptoms from insect bites

Itching and rashes

Usually red papules are observed, with or without blisters. In cases of secondary infection, complications may arise, such as impetigo

Allergic reactions

Urticarial papules or blisters may develop hours or days later. severe reactions include anaphylaxis, with symptoms such as angioedema, difficulty breathing, and, in rare cases, anaphylactic shock.

Hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation

may follow the resolution of the rash.

Possibility of disease transmission

Certain bites, such as from sandflies and ticks, are associated with infectious diseases.

Types of insects

Non-venomous insects

  • mosquitoes: pink itchy spots. they breed near stagnant water.
  • lice: cause red spots and itching but do not transmit diseases.
  • fleas: found on exposed parts of the body, causing rashes and itching.

Venomous insects

  • bees and wasps: sting, causing intense pain and possible anaphylaxis.
  • spiders: rarely venomous in greece. usually cause only mild symptoms.
  • scorpions: venomous bites that require immediate medical attention.

Other insects

  • ticks: transmit diseases such as lyme disease. they usually attach to soft parts of the body.
  • sandflies: transmit diseases such as leishmaniasis.

Management of bites

  • cleaning the wound with antiseptic.
  • antihistamine creams for itching.
  • ice to reduce swelling.
  • first aid in cases of anaphylaxis (emergency medical care).
  • oral antihistamines for systemic relief.
  • topical corticosteroids for intense inflammation.
  • antibiotics for secondary infections.
