Herpes labialis is a common viral infection primarily caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), though type 2 (HSV-2) may occasionally be involved. After initial infection, the virus remains dormant in the nerve ganglia and may reactivate during periods of stress, fatigue, or illness.
